It seems you can get your sleeping aids in any form that you want nowadays. There are benzodiazepines like Valium, non-benzodiazepines like Ambien, and even barbiturate sleeping aids are still used in some cases. Some people self medicate with their own sleeping aids (mostly wine), but none of these are the best option available for getting sleep. What if there were cheap, effective, side effect free, nonprescription sleeping aids available? There are, and they come in the form of natural supplements. People are generally very skeptical of natural sleep aids, and herbal medicine in general; but there is actually a lot of real science behind most of it. The herbs used in natural sleeping aids are each carefully chosen for their calming effect on the body and mind. The natural remedies are much easier on your system than prescription sleeping aids and do not leave you feeling groggy the next day. Natural sleeping aids also take into account providing good sleep quality, whereas prescription sleeping aids only focus on making the patient fall asleep.

Xanax is a drug that was designed only for temporary use, though many people who begin using it continue to beyond what is recommended out of fear of Xanax withdrawal symptoms. While the effect of Xanax withdrawal can be quite unpleasant, it is usually preferable to the negative effects of long term Xanax use. Like most benzodiazepines, Xanax is damaging to the kidneys and liver, and has many other negative side effects. The longer you take it, the more intense the effects of Xanax withdrawal will be. As any doctor will tell you, it is not recommended to suddenly stop using Xanax after a long period of time, but rather to slowly wean off of it in order to minimize the negative effects of Xanax withdrawal. Even so, you can expect things like anxiety and disruptions in sleep. There are other, natural ways you can deal with Xanax withdrawal effects like this; they include relaxation techniques, aroma therapy, therapy and not the least of all herbal supplements. Unlike prescription drugs, herbal supplements generally do not have addiction or dependency issues and are a great help for those experiencing Xanax withdrawal.

You are probably well aware of the drug Diazepam, though you most likely know it by its commercial name Valium. It is one of the most popular drugs in the world and is used to treat a variety of conditions. Diazepam was not the first benzodiazepine to be developed, but is by far the most popular and widely used, though in many cases Xanax is taking its place. Developed in the 1960s, Diazepam can be used to treat insomnia, anxiety, seizures and occasionally it is used for other purposes. Diazepam is not without its drawbacks however. It can be damaging to the liver and kidneys, it is habit forming and dependency forming, it interacts negatively with other drugs and with alcohol. Like most drugs it has side effects as well; Diazepam's side effects include blurred vision, loss of sex drive, hallucination, personality changes and difficulty urinating. Pregnant and nursing mothers should not use Diazepam. For all of these reasons herbal alternatives should be given careful consideration. Natural remedies can be used in place of Diazepam for both anxiety and sleep problems. Herbal supplements are generally safer and side effect free, as well as effective.

Chronic insomnia can be defined as either a problem falling asleep or unwanted waking and difficulty falling back asleep, and the problem must persist for more than a few weeks to be categorized as chronic insomnia. This can affect many areas of your life, and chronic insomnia can have many causes. Some causes of chronic insomnia are easily identifiable and rectified, such as a medication you may be taking as well as caffeine and other stimulants may be causing chronic insomnia. More often chronic insomnia is caused by stress and/or depression, and this is a more difficult problem to correct. There are medications and supplements designed for depression and specifically for insomnia caused by anxiety and depression. Herbal supplements made to ease anxiety and help induce sleep are much safer than their pharmaceutical counterparts and should be considered before taking any prescription drugs. If you are suffering from insomnia, chronic insomnia or temporary, it is something that should be corrected before it starts damaging your life.

It is hard to deny that natural sleep is the best type of sleep. Using alcohol or drugs to "knock yourself out" does not lead to good, natural sleep and usually leaves the person groggy and drowsy the next day. This is better than getting no sleep at all, but when you do this for long periods of time it leads to problems in mental state as well as dependency on a drug to fall asleep. If you have been taking a sleep medication for a long period of time, use alcohol to sleep or any other recreational drug switching to natural sleep can be very difficult at first but will be worth it in the long term. If you are experiencing insomnia and are considering the use of a powerful drug to get to sleep you should look at your other options first. Improvements in diet and increasing physical activity are the simplest ways to combat insomnia, but the last that many people consider. It is of course easier to simply take a pill, but as I said this does not result in natural sleep. If you do not have time for more exercise, cannot afford an improvement in diet or if these things didn't work for you, you can take a natural supplement for natural sleep. These are far more mild than pharmaceuticals, do not have negative side effects and do not leave you feeling drowsy during the day.
