Paul,
I too thank you for the somber reminder of Gene's passing. I don't think a week goes by when I don't play a record or cd of his music. It's almost as if he were family as well as a hero and idol to many of us. Sometimes while asleep and awa...
Paul thank you for reminding us of the sad passing of Gene. There isn't a day that goes by without me and many of us thinking of the maestro. Once again thanks from all of us Peter
Paul, I look forward to see a photo where the word flyin' is used as I still say gene used the word flying on his bass drum.
I think their is confusion on the next piont that I have raised. The picture in Dr Klauber's book is dated correct, and their was a Dean Martin Show appearance in 1965,and Gene's Quartet played I Got Rythm and Sing Sing Sing. ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS "GOOGLE" Photos of Milt Hinton" and you will see a perfect match.I have quite a few broadcasts of the quartet during the period you made the mistake of originally refering to ie 1966 &1967 and Eddie Dehaas is the bass player, one such live recording is at the Metrapole Dec 31 1966.
I realise now tha you are Paul Testa. We originally spoke quite some time ago, when we had some dialogue about Carol Bruce and Audrey Edmonson, how many members are familiar with those names? I have since changed jobs and genuinely lossed yor contact details, anyway look forward to hearing from you.
Paul, PAGE 55 IS WRONG. Their were different heads that Gene used but FLYING! WAS ALLWAYS USED AND NOT FLYIN'. I HAVE QUITE A FEW PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THIS PERIOD AND IN THREE OF THESE WHICH ARE CLOSE UPS OF GENE BEHIND HIS DRUMS THE BASS DRUM HEAD IS STARING AT YOU. THE OTHER SHOTS ARE FULL BAND AND AGAIN FLYING! IS CLEAR.
AS FAR AS BASS PLAYERS GO I NEVER SAID THAT MILT WAS A REGULAR BASS PLAYER OF GENE'S.WHAT I SAID WAS THAT ON PAGE 139 THE BASS PLAYER IN THE PICTURE IS NOT B MOTEN IT IS MILT HINTON. THE PHOTO IN QUESTION BY THE WAY IS FROM 1965,SO WHY MAKE REFERENCE TO 66& 67? THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I REFER TO "ATTENTION TO DETAIL"
JERRY
Hi Paul,
Thank you. No point in copying note for note, so I always try and get the feel. Where did you see me in Scotland? We played quite a few theatres in those days. George was a true original and a wonderful person. He is much missed.
Keep swinging
John
Hi Paul, good to put a face to the name. Hope you and family are well. There have been some interesting photos on EBay but the prices are getting ridiculous. Happy to send copies of the few that I have picked up. Take care Peter
Bruce the website looks great! Glad to see some charter members are posting again and hopefully we'll get a bunch of new members. I'm looking forward to those London House recordings. Gene was playing really well then and he had a wonderful ride cymbal during this period.
