Hey Jerry, "Klauber's book the Pictoral legend contains so many mistakes." Would you mind elaborating? Such a claim can cause trouble without back up evidence to support your backing. Michael

Oh man, it is the end of an error. As far as truly great drummers left, it can probably be counted on one hand. Louie was such a nice guy and a monster behind the kit. the man that put the hand clap in the middle of a Skin Deep solo. Rest peacef...

Long time browser of the Jazz Legends forum, first time member. It's weird I could never get approved to join for some reason. Anyway I am 16 and I live at the home of the annual PA drum shows in Sunbury, PA and take lessons from Ludwig guru Jack Lawton.

Always like Gene, but it wasn't until John Petters (a member here as well) got me got really into Krupa. I learned just how, stupendous his drumming is. He also got me heavy into all the old drummers like Dodds, Zutty, Ray Bauduc, Cozy Cole, and Geo Wettling. And, got me into traditional jazz and swing by me watching his youtube performances, I learned just how much better sounding and how much fun the musicians have when playing a swinging hot tune. He also was kind of to donate lots of old recordings to listen, to get me started. I've been collecting old music ever since.

I am also a big vintage drum enthusiast, mainly Ludwig, but I loved every company pre-1970, and study them all as well. The Ludwig in the picture is a beautiful 1967 Silver sparkle Super Classic with Aquarian vintage heads.

Page 55 is correct. Bass drum reads "Let's Go USA Keep "em Flyin' ". Page 139 is correct as far as the bass player goes. It is Benny Moten. Milt Hinton was never a regular member of Gene's quartets. In 1966 and 1967 Benny was the bass player.

This is not a complete inventory; Please do not get the impression that I am looking to make trouble, far from it.I do not claim to be an expert or an authority, all I have done however is study the man Gene Krupa his life and times for 43 years this September.Dr Klauber has been kind enough to send me an email, and is good in pionting out everyone supports---positively---everyone else; and in this respect the forum group could collectively put out some good material that is accurate for the benefit of Gene's name and legacy which in some respects is underestimated. Hi, Michael,

You're fortunate...blessed...to have Jack for a teacher and mentor. I've been wanting to come to Sunbury for the vintage show for years...and maybe will eventually get there.

Jack has helped me a lot also, and I have several drums that he has either made or repaired for me.

Your drums are beautiful, and with the Aquirian heads I know they sound great.

G'day Michael.
Would you send me your email address and I will send you that article on Cliff Leeman. For Davey Tough try Tommy Dorsey's original Song of India and Marie for starters. I will try and find a MD article on him and send you.

Kindest regards

Terry

G'day Michael.

Good to hear from you and thanks for your contribution in the video section.

As for Cliff Leeman; if you have read past posts you may see where I have nominated Cliff Leeman as being in my top 5 all time favourite drummers.
You can find him on Youtube under Eddie Condon, a good example being Riverboat Shuffle. He was on, among others, Tommy Dorsey's original huge hit "Begn the Beguine" Artie Shaw's "Frenesi" and was Bill Haley's early studio drummer and is featured on some of his early hits. There is suggestion that he was one of the drummers on Rock Around the Clock, but I have never been able to confirm that. I can send you a copy of an article from an early Modern Drummer magazine which reveals much about him. Let me know.

Kindest regards

Terry

G'day Michael......and it is good to see you and your youth as a member of our distinguished Forum. John Petters has done a great job in introducing you to so many of the great drummers of the past, and can I add a couple more names for you to explore; Chick Webb; the little master who was idolised by Gene, Jo Jones; the ballet dancer of the drumset and Cliff Leeman; from Tommy Dorsey to Bill Haley, his time never wavered. There are some fine examples of the latter two on Youtube for you to enjoy.

Hope to hear a lot more from you.

Kindest regards

Terry.
