Love this new Jazz Legends website. It's really modern and high tech. I salute Dr. Klauber and his wonderful staff for the update. Looks like I had to rejoin the new forum though, since it didn't recognize my email nor password. But regardless, this new website is tops, and I'm excitied to be a part of it. But where is everyone ?. Haven't seen much activity recently. Hope things pick up soon. Miss reading and communicating with Peter, Terry, and the gang. And a hearty welcome to all new members.
HELLO TO ALL ON THE FORUM; I SAID I WOULDN'T, BUT I'M BACK. I MISSED THE BANTER. HELLO TO THE NEW MEMBER'S. I DID NOT PUT MY MUG SHOT ONTHE SITE, BECAUSE, WHY RUIN EVERYONE'S DAY. BY THE WAY, IN REPLY TO RCA.COM,ABOUT THE ACTUAL NOTATION ON THE OPENING BREAK OF DON'T BE THAT WAY(CARNEGIE HALL 1938) I HAVE THE BOOK(REPRINT) GK DRUM METHOD AND IT'S NOT IN THERE. I WONDER IF EITHER IT IS ARCHIVED SOMEWHERE(BENNYGOODMAN ESTATE)OR IT WAS NOT IN THE ORIGINAL CHART'S. YOU KNOW HOW INOVATIVE AND BOMBASTIC GENE WAS THEN. ANYWAY, THAT'S ALL FOR NOW. TAKE CARE ALL; ZUFFEE
Hi Folks
Re: the opening break on Don't Be That Way - Carnegie Hall. I think I've virtually worked it out and will report later when I'm sure. However I have digitally slowed the recording down to 50% of the speed and it is on my page as an audio file. Maybe some more schooled minds than mine can come up with the correct notation.
Keep swinging
John
G'day All... new members, old members and those contemplating.
Like Zuffee, I also miss the banter of the Forum, particularly when it was in its hey day, even though that was only a couple of years back. Some of our discussions, heated, amusing but always educational, were really something. Can I suggest to all our new members to take the time to visit the old Forum, there is some great reading.
It is good that old friends Metropole, Zuffee and Rifftide have already rejoined and it is hoped that more of the old gang will re-emerge and revitalise this wonderful Forum. It is also with much surprise that I see some Buddy Rich material available via the Jazz Legends Site once again. Sounds like Mr Rich's daughter and Bruce may have buried the hatchet?
In reference to recent postings; Riffy, do we have to bring up the R.C word to get you to post with the fire and venom that you are so noted, instead of your most recent almost gentlemany and very reserved one?
And Zuffee; where is this rca.com? I have searched but unable to find. It would be very interesting to see the notation for the greatest drum break in the history of the universe. But like the film of the Krupa / Webb drum battle at the Savoy Ballroom, I think it is a furphy.
On a personal note, if anyone is interested, I have not had a drumstick in my hand since 22 July,2007, which was about the time that my doctor told me, in frightening terms, that it was most undesirable for me to make the trip to New York for the Big Doo, that eventually didn't. However I have not lost my passion for listening to, and studying, the history of classical jazz music.
Recently, on late night TV, there was a movie call "Let's Make Music" and it featured the Bob Crosby Band and more importantly Bob Haggart and Ray Bauduc. They played Winnetka in a way very different, but it demonstrated, briefly, just how good a drummer Ray Bauduc was, and that no one, including Gene, could nail that number in such a smooth and swinging way.
G'DAY TERRY AND HELLO TO ALL OF YOU; SORRY I HAD THE WRONG INFO THE OTHER DAY. I HAD RECIEVED AN E-MAIL(AS I'M SURE MANY OF YOU DID )FROM REX ALLEN. HIS E-MAIL SITE IS RCAJAZZ@AOL.COM. HE WAS ASKING IF ANYONE KNEW OR HAD ACCESS TO THE NOTATED VERDION OF GENE'S 2 BAR BRAKE ,ON THE ORIGINAL 1938 CARNEGIE HALL, DON'T BE THAT WAY. BY THE WAY, HOW MANY TIME'S, WE MEMBER'S HAVE IN THE PAST SPOKE OF THAT
DRUM BREAK, AS BEING THE REALLY ICEBREAKER ,TRUE START AND KICKOFF OF THAT MONUMENTAL EVENT. BRUCE HAD MENTIONED CHECKING THE ORIGINAL GK DRUM METHOD. I HAVE A COPY OF IT(REPRODUCTION) THAT TUNE IS NOT IN IT. I HAD THOUGHT, SINCE IT REALLY WAS A GOODMAN SONG, THAT REX WOULD POSSIBLY DO BETTER CHECKING WITH EITHER BENNY GOODMAN ESTATE, ARCHIVES, SHEET MUSIC, ECT. MY OTHER THOUGHT, WAS THAT THE DRUM BREAK WAS PRETTY MUCH IMPROVISED AND NOT ON THE CHART'S.LET'S REMEMBER HOW INOVATIVE AND BOMBASTIC GENE WAS THEN(I'M PROBABLY REPEATING MYSELF)ALSO, SPEAKING OF RAY BADUC, I HAVE ONE OF THE CD'S(FROM BRUCE OF COURSE) WHERE HE AND GENE ARE PLAYING A LITTLE FUNNY RADIO STINT. YES RAY WAS QUITE TALENTED AND IF I'M CORRECT WAS A BIG EXPONENT OF DIXILAND. OK, IF I'M WRONG, PLEASE CORRECT ME.ANYWAY, GOOD ON YOU TERRY. WELCOME ABOARD. LET'S HOPE THIS VESSEL DOESN'T SINK.; ZUFFEE
Hi Everyone
It seems a long time since we were all together on the Forum. Its so wonderful to see Jim (Rifftide) (I've called a few times but your mobile must have changed), Terry in OZ, Janet (Zuffee), John (Metropole), Paul Testa, Bruce Klauber.... etc Its like party time
Going to get some sleep now, but great to be in touch with you all and new friends too
Cheers from London Peter
Well Terry, great pic..is that really you?
Mr. Caputo has been unfortunate enough to have his friend..place apon YOUTUBE a very entertaining version of SING SING SING, not so much entertaining as in wow great drumming, no .. it's woah awful drumming, please can we chip in and buy Mr. Caputo a metronome for a pressie, bless he trys hard but with his faculty for unerringly placeing the wrong accent on the wrong beat..thats being generous, the guy has no beat..hey im off again..and i don't even play drums, after hearing Caputo maybe i should do as it seems no talent is ok!
Well enough of that imposter.
Mr. Brightman, do you still collate those old jazz mags?
I miss reading about our real hero's, and it's good to know you have preserved so many of these DOWNBEATS ect for us fans to enjoy.
I hope the lovely Zuffee remains a part of this fun forum and is enjoying gods best blessing, which is good health.
The new look forum is very nice and well done to all concerned.
Thanks for spending time to read this...RIFFTIDE
Hi Jim (Rifftide) It is indeed great to see you writing again on this new revised forum. Yes I have some new GK material but I've still got to get it bound. I have tried to call a few times, but you must have a new mobile number as I can't get through. As you say, it was great to see pic of Terry powering over his Slingerlands and wonderful that Zuffee & Metropole are back. Plus some new names which are obviously greatly welcome.
Did any of you buy the recent CD from Bruce with Gene leading the Benny Goodman Orchestra "Benny rides again" or something like that - Gene plays some great drums - a must.
Keep well all of you cheers Peter
Yes, that is really me in much happier times, wacking away on my Slings.
I knew that I could get some sought of response from you with the mere thought of mention of Mr R. C., but you seem to have mellowed somewhat, and you were very kind to him in your appreciation of his efforts. If it is the one where he has a goatee beard, then I have to agree with you. I only lasted a little while into the vid before pulling out. The man is a great drummer, I just wish he would be more himself.
As for you taking up playing the drums, you would be a whiz, as we all know, to play drums is just so easy!
Peter; what Riffy says about your compilations goes for me too. I have your entire collection of eight and am constantly re-reading them, and always finding something new of interest, and not just always about GK. They are just marvellous.
I suppose it had to happen; I have found a Buddy Rich vid on Youtube that I actually like and have viewed it a number of times. It is "We'll Git It" with the Tommy Dorsey Orch, from the movie Du Barry Was a Lady. I read somewhere that the scene was dubbed, this being so, they did an extremely good job. Also included and featured are ex Goodmanites Jess Stacy and Ziggy Elman.
As for that break in Don't Be That Way, I think that it is one of those things that just happened on the spot and impossible to replicate, which makes it so special.
And Zuffee and Metropole, dont be shy, let us put a face to your names,
Computerized to colour this version is not really up to the record tho, but nice.
Hey as we all know Buddy copied Gene ..so when will the Official Rich site get hep and get with this kinda progress?
Now this is more like it. Great to see the old gang and some new members activated. It was sad to see the "old forum" so idle for so long. Hopefully those days are over and the "new forum" will flourish. Nice to see the photos of Peter, Terry, Rifftide and Paul. I will soon publish one myself. By the way, that's a wonderfully comfortable looking throne Terry has. Is it a sheepskin top ?. I haven't held many sticks myself recently due to hand arthritis. But, perhaps the therapy of playing will help. Well, I have to pack and leave for NYC tomorrow. Taking a short trip for the July 4th Holiday weekend here in the colonies. I'll be bringing my 38 year old Ludwigs back with me to Cincinnati now that I have my own home here. Will sell my NY digs soon and remain in Ohio when I retire. But I will of course always miss NY. After all, me and Buddy Rich hail from he same town, Brooklyn.
Keep swinging and posting everyone. I'll check back in about 10 days.
